KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 12, 2024 (Reuters/CP) — Malaysia has inaugurated a national artificial intelligence office to shape AI policy and regulation, placing the country among the early adopters of a centralized government agency dedicated to overseeing AI governance. The National AI Office (NAIO), approved by the Malaysian Cabinet on Aug. 28, 2024, falls under the Ministry of Digital and is responsible for coordinating AI strategy, ethical guidelines, and cross‑sector adoption across government, industry, and society. Its first‑year objectives include drafting an AI code of ethics, a regulatory framework, and a five‑year AI technology action plan to run through 2030. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim referred to the launch as “another historical moment in our digital transformation journey”. These efforts position Malaysia as one of the earliest nations to establish a centralized AI authority of this scope in the region.
